Gave dawah to my mom for the first time on Christmas Day, Alhamdullilah
Asalaam alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatu :)
I was using the money that my grandma gave me to buy abayas, and I asked my mom if I could use her credit card to buy them online. At first, she was opposed to the idea of me wearing an abaya, mostly because I showed her the butterfly style and she thought I looked like a ghost.
So I compromised and decided to get a regular abaya, then she became more willing. I asked her which one she wanted me to wear, and we looked through the selections and she became happy knowing that she was a part of my journey. Alhamdullilah. We decided on the abaya, and then we started looking at hijabs…
mom: “Why are you doing this? What happened? Why all of a sudden you want to look like this? Is it because you keep reading?”
me: “Yes”
mom: “To me, you’ll always be a Christian, my Christian daughter.”
me: “Mom, I’m a Muslim.”
At first I wanted to leave because I knew where the conversation was going, but then I remembered a video that I watched about giving dawah, and realized this was an opportunity that Allaah subhana wa ta’ala gave me, and all this time I’ve been asking for it Alhamdullilah He gave me the chance TODAY, Christmas Day, December 25, 2011. SubhanaAllaah
mom: “So do you guys have a cross?”
me: “No”
mom: “Then how do you pray?”
I showed her the movements, and I told her what we say during each of them. SubhanaAllaah, it helped her ease into the idea of me being a Muslim because the words we say during Salaat is heart-softening. Alhamdullilah. She asked how many times we’re suppose to do it, and I said 5 times a day.
Then we talked about terrorism.
mom: “In college, my Muslim classmate said that they have territories where if you (a Christian) go there, you will be killed.”
So I asked her: “mom, in Christianity, there are different denominations, right?”
mom: ”Oh yea, like Evangelism, Lutheran, Baptist, Mormons…” (we listed all the ones we knew)
me: “That is somewhat similar to what we have in Islaam.”
I explained to her that there are sects, and that many of them are deviant. I gave her descriptions of the common ones that are displayed in the news, and then I brought up the khawarij.
me: “They are the ones that do the suicide bombings, the terrorist attacks. They’re the ones in the South (Philippines). They’re the ones you see on the News. Not all Muslims are like that, in fact, these ‘Muslims’ are the Dogs of Hell.”
You can really see my mom’s facial expression change, Alhamdullilah. I told her that is not Islaam, it’s a very extreme interpretation of it, and that I am not one of them.
mom: “Well, I read on the news that a Muslim husband hung his wife and cut off her eyes, ears, and whipped her.”
me: “Mom, do you remember the KKK? Remember when the Christian terrorists would bomb the churches with the Blacks in them during their fight for freedom?”
mom: “Yea”
me: “Are you those type of Christians?”
mom: “No.”
me: “I’m not those type of Muslims. Not all Muslim men are like what you read on the news. Muslim men treat us women with respect.”
Then the emotional part came in. Alhamdullilah. I told her about the Mother’s status in Islaam.
I held her feet in my hands, and placed her sole in my palms.
me: “Mom, in Islaam, the mothers are respected so highly, the Prophet Muhammad said that the Paradise lies beneath the feet of your mothers.
She smiled and said “ofcourse!”
and then I told her this hadith:
A man came to Allah’s Apostle sallallahu alayhi wa salaamand said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa salaam said, “Your mother.” The man said. “Who is next?” The Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Your mother.” The man further said, “Who is next?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Your mother.” The man asked for the fourth time, “Who is next?” The Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Your father.” [Hadith - Bukhari 8.2, Narrated Abu Huraira]
SubhanaAllaah she started to loosen up. Alhamdullilah, Allaahu Akbar.
I told her that we love all of the prophets, that we love Jesus, that we believe in the angels, the Day of Judgement, in Heaven and in Hell.
me: “Mom, do you believe in One God?”
mom: “Ofcourse I do!”
I told her to repeat after me:
La ilaha illallaah
So she did, and SubhanaAllaah we repeated la ilaha illallaah for ten minutes straight la hawla wa la quwwata illa billaah!
She smiled as she said it over and over again, like her heart was at peace. I couldn’t stop crying, just imagining the rewards she would get for it in shaa Allaah.
My heart was at peace.
I told the beauty of it, how only our tongue moves when we say it, and that’s how His mercy is upon us, that before we die, we just utter these words and the gates of Paradise is open to us. SubhanaAllaah, after hearing that, we repeated it again :)
My mother didn’t take the Shahada today, but in shaa Allaah she will before her time comes. She wanted to buy abayas too, and she even joked about converting - Alhamdullilah, that means she’s opened her mind to it. Allaahu Akbar.
Do you know how much this means to me? As a revert, seeing my family committing shirk every single day, but for one of them to listen about Islaam, point their finger up and say La ilaha illallaah - it means the world to me.
To all the reverts out there whose wishing to give dawah to their parents but fear their judgement, never ever give up on the power of du’a. How many times I’ve placed my head to the ground crying for Allaah subhana wa ta’ala to guide my family, and He gave this opportunity to me ON CHRISTMAS DAY SubhanaAllaah, how does this not bring hope? :)
Please, pray for those who aren’t Muslim to come back to al nur, to the haqq, to Islaam.
Ya Allaah, guide my mother, she has beared so much in this dunya for me, please open the Gates for Her. Ameen.
Keep spreading The Message, it could save a life :)
I love you all for the sake of Allaah.
Wa salaam alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatu.
